How Often Should You Change Your AC Filter? An HVAC Contractor's Honest Answer

How Often Should You Change Your AC Filter? An HVAC Contractor's Honest Answer

The short answer: a standard 1-inch AC filter lasts 30 to 90 days — and which end of that range you're on depends on your house, not the calendar. We're HVAC people, and this is the schedule we actually give our own customers.

The real schedule, by household

  • Every 30 days — you have pets that shed, smokers in the home, someone with serious allergies, or your system runs nearly nonstop (Texas summers count).
  • Every 60 days — the average home: a pet or two, normal dust, regular runtime.
  • Every 90 days — no pets, no allergies, a smaller home or a second home that sits empty part of the month.

Thicker filters (4–5 inch media filters) are a different animal — those typically run 6–12 months. Everything below is about the common 1-inch filter most homes use.

What happens if you wait too long

A clogged filter doesn't just get dirty — it strangles airflow. Your blower works harder to pull air through it, and the U.S. Department of Energy estimates a system straining against a dirty filter uses 5–15% more energy. Past that, the real damage starts:

  • Higher bills — the system runs longer to hit the same temperature.
  • A frozen evaporator coil — starved of warm air, the coil ices over, and a frozen coil can mean a compressor problem later. (A frozen coil is also a hidden cause of AC water leaks.)
  • Shorter equipment life — motors and compressors die early when they fight for air every cycle.
  • Dustier air — a loaded filter stops filtering; air starts bypassing around the edges, and what's in it lands in your home instead.

Signs your filter is already overdue

Hold it up to a light. If light barely passes through, it's done — regardless of what the calendar says. Other tells: dust building up faster than usual, rooms that won't cool evenly, a system that seems to run forever, and a filter that looks grey instead of white or blue.

How to find your filter size

It's printed on the frame of the filter you have now — something like 16x25x1. Six sizes cover most homes: 14x20, 16x20, 16x25, 20x20, 20x25, and 20x30. Not sure which rating to pair with it? Read our breakdown of MERV 8 vs. 11 vs. 13 before you buy anything.

The honest fix for forgetting

Almost nobody forgets on purpose — life just gets in the way, and the filter is out of sight in a closet or attic return. That's the entire reason Draynix exists: the Filter Plan puts your exact size and rating at your door on the schedule your household actually needs — monthly or every 3 months — at $21.24 per shipment with a subscription (15% off), shipped free. Take the 60-second quiz if you're not sure of your size or rating.
